Description

These fabulous apartments, with stunning views across the Exe estuary (Portland has limited views), were once the home of Captain George Peacock born in 1805, a celebrated mariner, inventor and surveyor who invented the first workable screw propeller, devised a way of making drinking water from sea water, and charted the waters and land that would eventually lead to the construction of the Panama canal. Easily accessible by road, rail and water, they sit opposite a small railway station and ferry port to Exmouth’s two miles of golden sands and traditional resort facilities. The fine beach and nature reserve at Dawlish Warren are 2 miles whilst sightseeing and shopping in the cathedral city of Exeter are 7 miles. The surrounding countryside is particularly good for walking and cycling – nearby Haldon Forest is criss-crossed with trails and there is even a cycle track to Exeter from Regent House itself, Exe trail cycleway – and the Exe estuary is great for sailing, windsurfing and all manner of water sports, with tuition for all levels of ability. Powderham Castle is within walking distance, visit the castle, farm shop and check out the events held there including classic car rally, food fayres and concerts. Golf courses are also close by. Floating restaurant at Exmouth is well worth a visit, booking advisable. Guided bird watching cruises are available, river cruises run all year and Jurassic Coast cruises in summer. Some of Devon’s famed resorts – Budleigh Salterton, Seaton and Sidmouth as well as the ‘English Riviera’ resorts of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham – and Dartmoor National Park’s rugged beauty are a little further afield. Shops and a pub serving food are within a 5-minute stroll.

Area Details

Dawlish

Dawlish is a traditional seaside town on the South Devon Coast with a wonderful golden sandy beach that is perfect for sandcastles. With rockpooling, a children's play area, amusements, boat hire and a pier you will not be short of things to do, find and see. Further beaches to explore can be found close by at Teignmouth and Dawlish Warren, both different in their own way. Dawlish is home to the famous black swans who have lived in the area since the late 1940s and can be seen swimming in The Brook. The town has a good variety of shops, restaurants, bars and cafes so if you wanted to ditch the car for the week you can. The area is great for both walks and cycling with the Dawlish to Exmouth trail offering 20 miles of stunning coastal scenery or join the South West Coast Path for equally stunning walks.
