Ottery St Mary

Ottery St Mary is a very quaint town that sits on the banks of the River Otter. The town is surrounded by beautiful thatched cottages and narrow streets and is one of the most historic towns in Devon, dating back to the Saxon times. The village of Tipton St John is 9 minutes away and a bit further is the town of Sidmouth at 20 minutes or 25 mins in the opposite direction is Exeter. The town has a variety of independent shops, a supermarket, fish and chip shop, 2 pubs and a petrol station. A community market is held here once a month which sells local produce and homemade cakes. Ottery St Mary holds two major events each year, Pixie Day is held in June and gives the children a chance to dress as a pixie and re-enact an old legend. The day also includes capturing the towns bell ringers and hiding them in the caves. Tor Barell Rolling is held in November and is a world-famous event. The original method was rolling the barrels along the street, but it was decided that carrying these on shoulders was much more appealing. Take a day trip to Crealy Aventure Park only 14 minutes away in Sidmouth, great fun for all the family. Explore Wildwood Escot in 220 acres of parkland or discover adventure outdoor sports at Devon Country Pursuits, Ottery St Mary really does offer something for everyone.
